Life Reimagined*
Action is the Enemy of Fear
*This post is based on the book of the same name by Richard Leider and Alan Webber.
Following my most recent separation from a corporate job at the outset of 2020, a good friend in academia that I had met during a previous leadership role at a large (~$1B) family foundation sent me the book “Life Reimagined” by Richard Leider and Alan Webber. Coincidently, I had decided to refer to my latest journey into the unknown as my “Midlife Reinvention”. Not surprisingly my curiosity was piqued as soon as I saw the title and I didn’t waste much time diving into the pages. The book is a great resource for anyone dealing with a mid-to-late career change/restructuring and covers a lot more ground than what I am going to briefly cover here and I highly recommend checking it out. In this blog I am mainly going to focus on the advice provided in Chapter 10 – “Action is the Enemy of Fear”.
The “Life Reimagined Manifesto”
CHOICE, CURIOSITY, COURAGE
- Choice is not a choice
- Curiosity is Change
- Courage is Commitment
Why “action”?
Because “Serendipity Happens”! Once you take action you allow surprises to happen.
“Life as Improv”
Leider points out that “……living in the moment creates energy. Experimenting on a daily basis is the way you take hold of a new outlook, a new attitude, possibly a new self-image.”
Final Thoughts: The Five Essential Living Reimagined Truths
- We need to live our lives with Choice, Curiosity, and Courage
- In a world of change there are 2 constants:
- Having your own purpose
- Being connected to others
- We are each an “experiment of one”. There is no “one-size-fits-all” answer for this phase of our life
- Life Reimagined is a journey of inner and outer discovery – with the ultimate being SELF-discovery
- Don’t go it alone (always seek out a Sounding Board)
So many relevant and powerful words of advice for all of us experiencing a “life reimagined” – or as I like to refer to it a “mid-life reinvention”………………..
